On Tuesday, December 2, Shelton School District is hosting a joint board meeting for Mason County Districts at the Shelton School District Conference room beginning at 6:00 p.m. Our state representatives and senator are invited to attend. School boards will be given an opportunity to address our legislators.
Southside has been named a 2014 School of Distinction. This award is presented to the top 5% of schools in Washington State who have exhibited the highest improvements for increased Reading and Math scores over the past 5 years. This was a great surprise after receiving recognition last year with a Washington Academic Achievement Award. Southside School District is also one of the few school districts that is noted as a school of choice. We are a small school district with amazing students, families, staff, and community that make these awards possible. Contact Principal/Superintendent Doris Bolender if you have any questions about this award or our school.
Students who miss 3 or more days of school during the month leading up to taking the National Assessment of Educational Progress score 12-18 points lower than those with good attendance, according to a new study. The negative impact holds true regardless of whether the absences are excused or unexcused, according to the analysis by Attendance Works. The study illustrates the extent of the correlation between absences and school performance. "This is true at every age, in every subject, in every racial and ethnic group and in every state and city examined," the report states. "In many cases, the students with more absences have skill levels one to two years below their peers."
Southside received another 6 month AmeriCorps Washington Reading Corps (WRC) grant to hire an interested person to serve as reading support in our K-2 program. If you are interested, you must complete the application with AmeriCorps directly. The position will run from Jan 1 - Jun 30. Thanks.
Winter weather is upon us and as we know can change quickly! Please start paying attention to the website, the television stations and radio station KMAS 1030AM. We will use these communication sources if we need to close or delay school. If we should have a two hour delayed start to school, there will NOT be any Kindergarten class for the day. Inclement weather calls are very difficult to make and must be made prior to 5:30 a.m.
Welcome to Southside School District! We are located in Shelton, Washington, 15 miles Northwest of Olympia, off Highways 101 and 3, on the beautiful Hammersley Inlet of Puget Sound. We have the pride of a smaller, family-oriented community with the benefit of many desired amenities nearby. We are celebrating the 112th Anniversary of Southside School District.
Southside School District has about 200 students in grades K-7 on one campus. Our teachers are all highly qualified, meeting state requirements, to meet the educational needs of our students while maintaining the personalization of a small district setting. Most of our employees have worked at Southside for over 10 years and their average years of experience in education are over 18 years. Generations of families have attended Southside. Approximately 40% of our student population is students and families who waiver into the school district due to the positive attributes of Southside. If you are looking for a quaint and nurturing learning environment with scaffolded, rigorous, and engaging curriculum, Southside School District meets these criteria.
Supported immensely by involved parents and active community members, and led by a capable and caring school board, our principal/superintendent, teachers, and support staff are committed to helping students reach their full potential as students and positive contributors to our community. The Southside community has continued to demonstrate a belief in the importance of education by continually supporting the levies needed to operate this district. Lastly, Southside is successful because of the support of the many parent and community volunteers. We have a parent/community booster club that works collaboratively with the school to ensure that our students have opportunities not afforded at other places. Together, our staff and community have a positive impact on the exceptional education of all of our students.
